I will be saving up for the smooth Q and hope to buy it for myself as a late birthday present. Having a muscle disorder my videos suck because there is no way to keep my hands still. Really? That's dope! I literally just ordered the Smooth-Q cause of how cheap it is (really is a no-brainer if you don't have a smartphone gimbal yet), and I used to be hardcore into the "vape scene" so I have tons of left over 18650 and 26650 batteries and chargers. I'm loving how so many of these gimbals use those style of batteries! Not only is it good for people like me who have left over batts, but even if you don't have left over batteries, the fact that you can get in there and just rip the old one out (if you have the basics in knowledge of regulated/unregulated batteries of course) and then boom, pop a fresh one in and you're still going strong. Dopeskies.
I've had a Zhuyun Smooth-C for about 8 months now. Its a bit more basic (no tracking and linking to the phone) and basically just a stabiliser in a few different tracking modes (follow, pan follow and locked) and I've absolutely loved it. Its been so fun for me to see these big brand companies like GoPro and DJi coming up with their iterations and how unbelievably expensive they are in comparison. This product has totally upped by Video game. Zhiyun are doing good things and I hope its a reliable Chinese firm that is going places. Top value product.

A gimble for only 139 dollers and it actually does what all other gimbles do, which is stabalize your videos. It doesnt have the bells and whistles as the more expensive ones but heck it does what its suppose to do well. Just purchased a Smooth Q because of it. Thanks for your review!

re tracking, would you really want the camera frame to shift around like a freak every time your subjects head moves? I prefer the zhiyun in that if i`m filming a general scene of people and tracking a target subject like the person holding the microphone I wouldn`t want my camera frame shifting around just because he is moving his head around in a scene or taking 2 steps left or back...
Thanks for the video, learned a lot. Decided on the DJI Osmo, especially since it's selling for $159 on the DJI refurb store, which is considerably less than the $299 retail and much closer to the $130 ish price of the Smooth Q.
I was originally looking at the Smooth-Q to replace my failing iStablizer. But after seeing all the features of the Osmo I am going with that. As an Inspire 1 owner, I love DJI they are great products!
I think the apps are really meant to be used on a second cell phone so you can have the gimbal in a stationary position and using the second cellphone as a remote. One thing that wasn't mentioned is that the Smooth-Q also has an action cam plate so you can mount a GoPro or SjCam type camera to the gimbal.
I usually don't watch videos too long but here your video is great, you have the talent to make me hold until the end. Your videos are really interesting
Great review as always. Would have preferred a comparison on how the gimbals stabilised whilst running or walking. All in all the dji is twice the price and that is why I have placed an order for the zhiyun.
If you use the Zhiyun app for the Crane and Crane-M you don't need to touch the screen for it to track your face. But you have to choose face tracking in the settings. That will probably work with this gimbal.

Awesome reviews! One thing to mention, to mount a GoPro or compact camera on these gimbals, the gimbal head needs to be rotated 180 deg, which means the Osmo won't work without the handle being backwards since it doesn't spin 360 like the Smooth Q.
So how come he has no issues when using iPhone 7+ and DJI mobile? It's a known issue with the micro jitters and the iPhones onboard OIS issue. I think he might be applying post production stabilization or possible cropping of the image. Just trying to see if it's compatible with my iPhone as I really want to get a gimbal.
ND Film you know what I just noticed the update in filmicpro now. So I wonder if this the 100% legit way with DJI mobile now. I'll wait to see more reviews on this. Thanks for the info btw.
You could turn off the OIS with the Filmic app for a while now and it doesn't appear to solve the micro jitter issue.. I've heard that there are 3 flavors of OIS in the iPhone 7+ and one of them is Mechanical that can't be turned off in any software setting. It's only used on the wide angle rear camera. If you use the osmo mobile with the rear wide setting you get jitters regardless what you try with any app. The 2x rear or selfie front cameras work fine since they do not use the mechanical version. I saw a video that a user discovered that if you place a small frig magnet behind the camera (screen side of phone) it holds the spring used for OIS in place and the jitters are fixed... This method however is not recommended since iOS has warnings about mag fields, also the OIS on the phone is still trying to fight the movement and can't what long term effects does this have? I really want to get it too but the jitter issue is a really big worry for me. Its frustrating that you have to use 2x camera to get rid of the jitter. Hopefully one day this gets fixed but DJI can't do much if apple OIS is mechanical too.
Smooth Q is all anyone really needs for the price. $300 price tag is not worth it for what you get and I feel that the company will change their price soon. You're paying for stabilization and both do it very well, so paying $300 for the results I get paying only $130...and I bet no one could tell the difference in shots done with both devices....for those reasons, I say Smooth Q.

At $140 versus $300, I think I can live with the Smooth Q limitations. DJI is ahead of the curve for sure for drones and gimbals, but they need competition from other companies to keep them on their toes. Hoping the next version of Osmo Mobile has a detachable handle like the Osmo+.
I have the Zhiyun Smooth Q and it's came with a semi-hard case. I traveled last summer to Norway and it's done a great job! The battery can hold for really long and as a traveler - it's a huge plus over the Osmo. I have to point that I'm using the regular camera app of my Samsung, I tried the camera app of Zhiyun but as far as my use I'm not need all the features (and I'm sure that 80-90% of the users do the same). IMHO at the price tag of it - it's a bargain.
The DJI Osmo is supported by Filmic Pro app, which is a great app for filming. Unfortunately there is no room for a charger cable on the Osmo, limiting filming time.
I like the price with the features of Smooth Q, also my RUclips channel is now starting to grow so i need to keep my investments/ expenses low for now. Osmo is defiantly better though. Thanks again, i just ordered mine (Smooth Q) after watching you comparison.
Thanks for another great review. You really cover both very well. One thing I'm going to disagree with most people on is - I like the way the Smooth-Q tracked better. Its framing was better, and it let you move in the frame, without letting you out of the frame. The Osmo was more like an amateur cameraman who always keeps the face dead center. That said, the Osmo does look like the better device, overall. Thanks again!

I think they’ve upgraded the Smooth q kit since then cause mine came with a form fitted semi-hard case. And I know they increased the torque of the motors since then. It can easily hold iPhones with cases but still balances better without them just because of the thickness difference pushing the phone forward more

I was really enjoying using the osmo mobile with my Xperia z5 premium until I updated to android 7.0 and the DJI app does not support it at the moment.
This is a great video and review but I think on the tracking part the reason the Smooth-Q is moving slower is that it doesn't seem to be locked in tight on your face like the DJI is. I don't know if it can lock in tighter but it seems like that is the problem. I actually just ordered the Smooth-Q a few moments ago after watching a lot of different reviews about it. I guess I'll know how good it locks on when it arrives tomorrow. Once again great video.
Great review! I ended up getting the Zhiyun Smooth-Q 3-Axis and it's on the way. I sold my lanparte gimbal for this one. Reason being that lanparte didn't have phone connectivity and ability to follow an object or a person.

Smooth 3 and DJI Osmo would be a more balanced comparison between 2 similar iPhone gimbals. The lower level cheap mass market Smooth Q level of Gimbal does not exist in the Dji iphone gimbal world (..so far...) I would be extremely curious what you would make of those 2 next to each other. I just got the smooth 3 today , and was owner of smooth 2 before. And already with the Smooth2 older version, i would never buy the Osmo....hands down..
I think the ability to charge your device whilst using the smooth q is a real plus. It is the one thing I don't like about the osmo mobile and why I would probably go with the osmo + over the osmo mobile but this might mean a diffferent approach.
I've been looking everywhere for a review as comprehensive as yours. I've used the Osmo Mobile extensively but where I live (India), the Zhiyun is cheaper by over 30%. Hardware-wise they both seemed similar and the deciding factor for me was the app, which you covered excellently. The motion time-lapse feature on the DJI Go app was a personal favourite and I guess it'll be the feature that makes me Team Osmo Mobile! PS: Great review, I instantly subscribed!

It seems the tracking is a tad better on the DJI, but the app on the smooth q seems to have a wider shot? If that makes sense. It seemed to have a wider angle on it making the tracking seem less.
With that price smooth Q is a game changer, although not the quality? The problem I had with some mobile is get error after certain maneuver of shooting.

I bought this gimbal a 2 days ago. The stabilize is good, but the software is poor, hasn't time lapse or options for take many pictures and combine in one, like Google app. If you don't or want not spend a lot of money with a gimbal I advice is Smooth-Q

Nigel Paquin because both app has now settings to turn off OIS. Third party app has this option as well. Filmic Pro v6 is the way to go.

I like the price with the features of Smooth Q, also my RUclips channel is now starting to grow so i need to keep my investments/ expenses low for now. Osmo is defiantly better though. Thanks again, i just ordered mine (Smooth Q) after watching you comparison.

Thanks for another great review. You really cover both very well. One thing I'm going to disagree with most people on is - I like the way the Smooth-Q tracked better. Its framing was better, and it let you move in the frame, without letting you out of the frame. The Osmo was more like an amateur cameraman who always keeps the face dead center.
That said, the Osmo does look like the better device, overall. Thanks again!

Excellent review. The DJI is very nice but for 130 bucks the SQ is quite reasonable. It's good to see Ay Nine in the video too!
I think they’ve upgraded the Smooth q kit since then cause mine came with a form fitted semi-hard case. And I know they increased the torque of the motors since then. It can easily hold iPhones with cases but still balances better without them just because of the thickness difference pushing the phone forward more

I was really enjoying using the osmo mobile with my Xperia z5 premium until I updated to android 7.0 and the DJI app does not support it at the moment.

This is a great video and review but I think on the tracking part the reason the Smooth-Q is moving slower is that it doesn't seem to be locked in tight on your face like the DJI is. I don't know if it can lock in tighter but it seems like that is the problem. I actually just ordered the Smooth-Q a few moments ago after watching a lot of different reviews about it. I guess I'll know how good it locks on when it arrives tomorrow. Once again great video.
Great review! I ended up getting the Zhiyun Smooth-Q 3-Axis and it's on the way. I sold my lanparte gimbal for this one. Reason being that lanparte didn't have phone connectivity and ability to follow an object or a person.

Birincisi, sistemin ayaklardan gelen, yani yürüme ve ya koşmaya bağlı oluşan "zıplama" etkisini bertaraf edememesi.
İkincisi ise servo motorlarının kamerayı dengede tutabilmek amacıyla sürekli tetikte olmasından kaynaklanan o cızırdama seslerinin bir "arka plan gürültüsü" olarak duyulması.
Çözüm;
DJI'a ait olmayan(!) amatörlerin çekdiği inceleme videolarında, özellikle kameraya yakın objelerde yürüme ve koşmaya bağlı bu "zıplama" etkisi çok rahat görülebilir ki eğer geniş açı olmasaydı durumun vehamiyeti daha da ön plana çıkardı.
İşte burada kameramanın eğitimi ve adımlarını esneterek atmayı öğrenmesi gerekiyor. Zira kazık gibi yürümeyle oluşan dikey yollu hareketker gimbal tarafından bertaraf edilemez. DJI ronin içinde bu geçerlidir.

Smooth 3 and DJI Osmo would be a more balanced comparison between 2 similar iPhone gimbals. The lower level cheap mass market Smooth Q level of Gimbal does not exist in the Dji iphone gimbal world (..so far...)
I would be extremely curious what you would make of those 2 next to each other. I just got the smooth 3 today , and was owner of smooth 2 before. And already with the Smooth2 older version, i would never buy the Osmo....hands down..

I think the ability to charge your device whilst using the smooth q is a real plus. It is the one thing I don't like about the osmo mobile and why I would probably go with the osmo + over the osmo mobile but this might mean a diffferent approach.

I've been looking everywhere for a review as comprehensive as yours. I've used the Osmo Mobile extensively but where I live (India), the Zhiyun is cheaper by over 30%. Hardware-wise they both seemed similar and the deciding factor for me was the app, which you covered excellently. The motion time-lapse feature on the DJI Go app was a personal favourite and I guess it'll be the feature that makes me Team Osmo Mobile!

It seems the tracking is a tad better on the DJI, but the app on the smooth q seems to have a wider shot? If that makes sense. It seemed to have a wider angle on it making the tracking seem less.
It all boils down to budget and in this case, either way, both delivered good value.
that selfie mode on the smooth Q is what is really selling it for me

He missed out that the DJI Osmo's trigger button has a selfie function with a triple click and the Osmo mobile will turn around and face you.
With that price smooth Q is a game changer, although not the quality? The problem I had with some mobile is get error after certain maneuver of shooting.

I bought this gimbal a 2 days ago. The stabilize is good, but the software is poor, hasn't time lapse or options for take many pictures and combine in one, like Google app. If you don't or want not spend a lot of money with a gimbal I advice is Smooth-Q

You can also adjust the Smooth Q by hand, but only in the lock mode.
